Obravnava javnega mnenja oz. (ne)zmožnosti demokratizacije modernih družb je vzrok teoretičnega spopada med Lippmannom in Deweyem na začetku 20. stoletja. V tem intelektualnem spopadu ne gre samo za formalno vprašanje definiranja javnega mnenja, temveč za globlje nesoglasje okrog načina urejanja odnosov med državljani in državo ter pomena množičnih medijev kot prenosnikov specializiranega družboslovnega raziskovanja širše javnosti. Pomembnost obeh del, Lippmannovega Javnega mnenja in Deweyevega Javnost in njeni problemi, je pravzaprav v paradoksalni poziciji, ki jo je empirična paradigma javnomnenjskega raziskovanja odprla v zgodovini razvoja pomena javnega mnenja. Lippmannova »fantomska javnost« ali pojmovanje javnega mnenja kot »podob v človeških glavah« in Deweyevo »antiutopično« pojmovanje demokracije so tudi danes, pol stoletja kasneje, velik izziv za raziskovanje pomena javnega mnenja v modernih, komunikacijsko hiper razvitih družbah. Tudi če na prvi pogled njune teorije stojijo vsaka na svoji strani prepada, lahko razumemo njun potencial šele s soočanjem argumentov, ki jih oba avtorja uporabljata v zagovor svoje vizije demokratične družbe. Prevoda obeh del predstavljata temeljno literaturo ne samo študija komunikologije, temveč družboslovja nasploh.
