Avtorica Ana Barbič je utemeljiteljica ruralne sociologije na Slovenskem,  leta 2005 je za svoje dosežke na področju ruralne sociologije prejela naziv častne članice Slovenskega sociološkega društva.

Njena knjiga predstavlja nekakšen dokument tranzicijskega obdobja Slovenije in obdobja pred njim predvsem na področju snovanja in uvajanja paradigme celovitega, vzdržnega razvoja podeželskih skupnosti in partnerskega pristopa v izvajanju konkretnih razvojnih projektov. V njej teoretsko opredeljuje in praktično utemeljuje paradigmo vzdržnega razvoja ter interdisciplinarni pristop k razvojnim projektom. Opozarja, da je za uresničevanje vzdržnega razvoja podeželja nujno sodelovanje s sosednjimi lokalnimi skupnostmi, regijami in državnimi ustanovami ter vključevanje "ženske teme" v razvojne projekte podeželskih skupnosti. Vlogi kmetice in kmečke družine nameni skoraj tretjino prostora, prav toliko pa ga nameni obravnavi kulturne in naravne dediščene kot razvojnemu potencialu slovenskega podeželja.

S svojo vsebinsko pestrostjo se monografija obrača na številne skupine bralcev: na študente in profesorje strok, ki obravnavajo kmetijstvo in podeželsko območje; na strokovnjake kmetijskih in drugih strok, ki delajo na terenu ter v občinskih, regijskih in državnih ustanovah; na nevladne organizacije, ki se ukvarjajo z varovanjem okolja, naravne in kulturne dediščine, na turistična društva ter na stanovske organizacije in zveze, kot so društva kmečkih/podeželskih žensk, turistična društva, Zveza turističnih kmetij Slovenije ter druga društva in njihove zveze.
