Filozofija evolucije prinaša različna razmišljanja o evoluciji; poleg bioloških tudi filozofska, etična in semiotična. Osrednji del knjige je prevod temeljnega dela o evoluciji, Kaj je evolucija, Ernsta Mayrja, ki ga imenujejo Darwin dvajsetega stoletja. Mayr evolucijo, ki je sicer zelo zapletena, pojasnjuje na enostaven način, dostopen vsem razmišljajočim bralcem, kar je med znanstveniki redka odlika. Spremljajoče razprave njegov prikaz še razširjajo v kontekstu filozofije evolucije.
Knjiga vsebuje tudi tri razprave. V prvi z naslovom Evolucija in filozofija John S. Wilkins trdi, da je razmerje med evolucijo in filozofijo staro toliko kakor sama ideja evolucije. Nato predstavlja filozofske in znanstvene kritike evolucije, vprašanja redukcionizma, napredka, direkcionalizma, teleologije, naturalizma in evolucijske etike. V drugi razpravi z naslovom Občutiti znake: Nastanek pomena v biološki filozofiji Susanne K. Langer in Hansa Jonasa evolucionist Andreas Weber pojasnjuje pogled biosemiotikov, ki raziskujejo pomen znakov, s katerimi organizmi med seboj komunicirajo in s tem izkazujejo svojo subjektiviteto in voljo do življenja. V tretji razpravi, ki je uvodna, pa Iztok Simoniti kot humanist razmišlja o naravi človeškega znanja in ustvarjalnosti, o razkolu med humanističnimi in naravoslovnimi znanostmi ter odgovornosti za živo in neživo naravo.

Filozofija evolucije je po več kakor pol stoletja prvo celovito delo o evoluciji v slovenščini, zato pomeni prevajalski, terminološki in intelektualni prispevek k razmišljanju o življenju.
