Knjiga vprvi vrsti predstavi združevanje kvalitativnih in kvantitativnih metod v družboslovnem raziskovanju, torej uporabo različnih metod zbiranja in analize podatkov v okviru iste raziskave. Čeprav imajo tovrstni načrti že relativno dolgo zgodovino, pa je bila njihova uporaba zaradi nekaterih omejitev (časovnih, finančnih, kompleksnosti izvedbe) do sedaj relativno redka.

Kvalitativno in kvantitativno raziskovanje sta se s pojavom informacijsko - komunikacijske tehnologije (IKT), predvsem interneta, korenito spremenila. Virtualna etnografija, online intervjuji in online fokusne skupine so že dobro uveljavljene raziskovalne aktivnosti in prakse na internetu. IKT prinašajo torej številne možnosti za inovativno uporabo online okolja, ki lahko znatno olajšajo kompleksno zbiranje podatkov v raziskavah z združenimi metodami.

Avtorica je raziskovalni načrt preverila v dveh zahtevnih in izvedbeno kompleksnih eksperimentih, s katerimi je tudi empirično dokazala njegove številne prednosti. Poleg konceptualizacije in empiričnega preverjanja izboljšanega raziskovalnega načrta mešanih metod, je originalni prispevek tudi na področju uporabe kvalitativnih metod (kvalitativnih intervjujev in fokusnih skupin) v spletnem okolju, ki imajo v tem kontekstu številne, ne lahko razrešljive specifične dileme. Ugotovitve, do katerih je prišla (npr. problematika zunanjih motenj v spletnem intervjuju, določitev optimalnega števila udeležencev v online fokusni skupini), predstavljajo zelo relevantne napotke vsem raziskovalcem, ki bodo te metode zbiranja podatkov uporabljali v okolju IKT v bodoče.
