Glavno sporočilo knjige se osredotoča na opazovanje razvoja kompetenc preko informacijsko-procesnega in situacijskega učenja. Obe obliki učenja lahko opazujemo v sferi izobraževanja in v svetu dela. Avtorja v knjigi predstavita razvoj kompetenc v visokošolskem prostoru predvsem v relaciji do trga delovne sile. Vedno več je dokazov, da se rahlja vez med sfero dela in izobraževanja, povezujejo pa se tudi tradicionalno ločeni svetovi naravoslovja, družboslovja in humanistike, kar že v tem trenutku ustvarja hibridne poklice. Izgradnja celovitega sistema prenosa znanja v visokošolskem prostoru je mogoča predvsem na podlagi upoštevanja posebnosti izobraževanja in dela posameznih poklicnih skupin. Zaenkrat lahko sfera izobraževanja relativno avtonomno odloča, kateri obliki učenja bo dala poudarek glede na obstoječe prakse izvajanja praktičnega pouka, strateške usmeritve, obseg, v katerem izobraževalna institucija svoje diplomante pripravi na poklic (generalistični vs. specialistični študij), in ambicij profesionalnih skupin oziroma države do regulacije poklicnega trga. Med vsemi elementi pa je mogoče začrtati določeno logiko povezave. 

Avtorja predstavita štiri tipe razvoja kompetenc, in sicer: strategija zgodnjega uvajanja novega izobraževalnega programa, integracija prakse v študijski program, prenos prakse v delodajalske organizacije ter institucionalno združevanje visokošolskih institucij z delodajalskimi organizacijami in državo. Na teh izhodiščih avtorja opišeta načine in temeljne usmeritve razvoja komptenc na področju visokošolskega izobraževanja.
Zaključujeta, da za doseganje večje stopnje kompetentnosti profesionalcev samo prizadevanja izobraževalnih institucij ne zadostujejo.
