Deveta knjiga Vrednote v prehodu izstopa iz skupnega okvira vseh predhodnih, ki jih označuje program SJM. V njej sta prikazani dve sociološki raziskavi, prva, ki zajame mednarodne migracije in vključenosti Slovencev in Slovenk v migracijske procese, in druga, ki obravnava probleme razredne/slojne (stratifikacijske) strukturiranosti »jugoslovanske« oz. nacionalnih družb republik in pokrajin SFRJ v sredini osemdesetih let. Gre za dva izjemno obsežna in pomembna sociološka raziskovalna projekta, usmerjena v krizne razmere in razsežja takratne jugoslovanske družbe. Migracijska raziskava je potekala pod delovnim naslovom »Slovenci v ZR Nemčiji« – in to v času množičnega odhajanja delavcev iz Slovenije v tujino. Skupina raziskovalcev (Klinar, Saksida, Toš) je vodila raziskavo v obdobju 1973–1987; na osnovi raziskave je bila izpisana obsežna literatura. Raziskava Socialne strukture slovenske družbe pa je potekala v osemdesetih letih, vodila jo je skupina raziskovalcev iz vseh republik in pokrajin bivše Jugoslavije; z obsežnim standardiziranim vprašalnikom je bilo v raziskavo vključenih skupaj 15.976 respondentov v okviru reprezentativnih vzorcev vseh republik in pokrajin. Potek analitičnega dela na raziskavi je bil prekinjen zaradi razpada države.
