Knjiga 'Ženske v politiki v državah Zahodnega Balkana' (Women in Politics in Western Balkan Countries) prinaša komparativno analizo treh izbranih študijev primerov (tranzicijskih držav) Zahodnega Balkana (Makedonija, Srbija in Hrvaška) s ciljem pojasniti vzroke za nizko prisotnost žensk v strukturah političnega odločanja.

V obsežno poglobljeno analizo so predstavljene kompleksne povezanosti institucionalnih, družbeno-gospodarskih in kulturnih dejavnikov.

The book 'Women in Politics in Western Balkans Countries' provides a comparative analysis of three selected case studies (transition countries) of the Western Balkans (Macedonia, Serbia and Croatia) in addition of explaining the reasons for lower presence of women in decision making structures.

The book focuses on the women’s political presence, the impact of socio-economic, cultural and institutional factors on the position of women in public/private spheres, as well as the impact of globalisation and Europeanisation processes on the positive changes in these countries.

Based on the selected theoretical concepts, such as: the concept of presence, gender equality concept, the constructivist concept, rational choice institutionalism, cultural concept ... the book is focused on researching the impact, and causal connection between certain factors of inluence on women’s political presence in the three countries of the Western Balkans.

While elaborating the shift from socialism/post-socialism to democracy, a dynamic approach of analysing changes in the socio-political context is used. With a comprehensive in-depth analysis, in the book is presented the complex relation among institutional, socio-economic and cultural factors.

Even the post-socialist countries have introduced many democratic changes, still, gender inequality is evident (among other) in the political life. These countries are facing with difficults while introducing changes, and more over, this is remarkable in the way of effective functioning of equal opportunities mechanisms, which are recommended, or even required, by the international organizations such as COE, OSCE, UN and EU. In these countries, it is necessary to be applied special measures for eliminating the traditional perceptions regarding gender roles between men and women in order to overcome the prevailing stereotypes and negative public attitude, which are the main obstacles for inclusion of women in politics.
