When young people grow up, they place themselves in a wider space, and without their own spatial definition, indirectly offered by patriotism, this is not possible. In this case, irreparable damage will be done, and our greatest symbols of the homeland will be crippled in value, and with it, the homeland potential to build patriotic foundations and healthy patriotic self-confidence. Undoubtedly, this is far too important content to improvise on one side or do nothing on the other. Therefore, it is necessary to shake up the content of the homeland at the very beginning of the citizens' identity formation, which inevitably refers to the field of primary and secondary education in Slovenia. The basis of the monograph "Patriotic and civic consciousness among youth" is a research conducted as part of a targeted research project, which was divided into two phases; in the first phase, the aim of the research was to create a questionnaire that would best capture various aspects of patriotic consciousness and attitude among youth; in the second phase, the aim of the research was to analyze the results of the empirical survey and to make a comparative study with previous similar surveys in order to discover some tendencies of patriotic and civic consciousness among youth in the Republic of Slovenia. Like other surveys, also this one shows a low level of expression of patriotism, which does not explain its absence, but points to two things: We do not know how to express this value because we are not sure of its quality, and at the same time we have not approached this issue systematically. The monograph deals with the general attitude of young people towards patriotism and their knowledge about key events and people during the period of independence, as well as their knowledge about national symbols, the Slovenian Constitution, the political system, human rights and democracy.
