Gledano iz avstrijskega zornega kota nas vedno znova preseneti, s kako obsežnimi in bogatimi podatkovnimi viri razpolaga slovensko primerjalno druž­boslovje in s kakšnimi izjemnimi dosežki se lahko pohvali.

Zdi se, da za tem stoji obsežen inštitut, podoben velikim evropskim inštitutom, kot nemški GESIS, kjer deluje več sto raziskovalcev, ki imajo na voljo dolgoročne finančne vire.

Presenetljivo pri tem je, da je pobudo za slovensko podatkovno bogastvo in pestro pa­leto različnih primerjalnih analiz mogoče pripisati eni osebi, prvemu uredniku te knjige Niku Tošu. V okviru programa Slovensko javno mnenje je s svojo skupino v zadnjih petih desetletjih razvil program trajnega raziskovanja slovenske družbe in s tem vključil Slovenijo v vse pomembne mednarodne družboslovne raziskave, od International Social Science Program (ISSP) do European Social Survey (ESS).

Slovenija ima kot edina t. i. tranzicijska dežela na voljo visoko razvit po­datkovni sklad, ki zajema vse ključne stopnje prehoda od republike nekdanje Ju­goslavije, prek osamosvojitve in razvoja samostojne državnosti, do njene vključi­tve v evropsko skupnost narodov – EU, do pojava krize v zadnjem obdobju.

Pri tem se slovenskemu družboslovju z udeležbo v pomembnih mednaro­dnih raziskovalnih programih odpirajo možnosti evropskih in zunajevropskih primerjav, hkrati pa se Slovenija kot referenčna točka vključuje v primerjalne analize drugih raziskovalcev.

Slovenija je z delom Nika Toša in njegove raziskovalne skupine na področju empiričnega družboslov­nega raziskovanja uveljavljena kot evropski primer dobre prakse in pričujoča knjiga to samo potrjuje.
