Štiri ženevske konvencije skupaj s tremi dopolnilnimi protokoli predstavljajo hrbtenico mednarodnega humanitarnega prava, ki ureja vodenje oboroženih spopadov in si prizadeva omejiti njihove učinke. Ženevske konvencije so uredile in zaščitile  položaj oseb, ki ne sodelujejo v oboroženih spopadih (civilnih oseb, reševalcev in humanitarnih delavcev) in tistih, ki v njih ne sodelujejo več (ranjenih, bolnih, brodolomcev ter vojnih ujetnikov). Določajo tudi ukrepe, ki so potrebni, da se prepreči ali konča kršitve teh pravil.
Ženevske konvencije, ki izhajajo iz pogorišča II. svetovne vojne,  so ratificirale vse države in so univerzalno sprejete. Njihov poglavitni namen je zmanjšati nepotrebno trpljenje udeleženih v spopadih, ki naj bodo tudi v času oboroženih spopadov obravnavani humano.
Ženevske konvencije, kljub različni dinamiki dandanašnjih konfliktov in globalnih izzivov,  še vedno rešujejo življenja, kot so predvideli njihovi snovalci pred natančno  sedmimi desetletji, 12. avgusta 1949.
 
Leta 1977 sta se konvencijam pridružila dva dopolnilna protokola, leta 2005 pa še tretji. Prva ženevska konvencija ureja položaj ranjencev in bolnikov oboroženih sil v vojni. Druga opredeljuje položaj ranjencev, bolnikov in brodolomcev oboroženih sil na morju, tretja govori o ravnanju z vojnimi ujetniki, četrta pa ureja zaščito civilistov med vojno. Dodatna protokola določata še pravila o zaščiti žrtev v oboroženih spopadih, in sicer prvi v mednarodnih spopadih, drugi pa v nemednarodnih spopadih. Tretji dopolnilni protokol določa možnost uporabe dodatnega razlikovalnega simbola med oboroženim spopadom

Slovenija s to priročno publikacijo omogoča, da se z vsebino ženevskih konvencij in dopolnilnimi protokoli seznani najširša slovenska javnost, kot tudi da se njihova vsebina dosledno prenaša v praktično delovanje pri nas. Dejstvo, da publikacija vsebuje besedila tako v slovenskem kot tudi izvirnem angleškem jeziku pa omogoča, da bralci primerjajo in nadalje razvijajo slovensko terminologijo na tem področju.
